Collections Guide

The Franklin Historical Museum (FHM) Archive contains over 100 collections relating to the history and cultural heritage of the town of Franklin. Record types include documents, diaries, periodicals, photographs, scrapbooks, film reels, maps, blueprints, and other media. Archival collections are organized according to their creator, the person or organization from which the records originated. The creator of a collection is most often identified in the collection name. Where a creator does not exist, a collection may be identified by the record or media type comprising that collection.

Each collection at FHM has been assigned a unique collection number, and placed in a category according to their subject matter. Please note that this identification system is for archival collections only. There will be a separate identification system for artifact collections and clothing.

Collation

In some instances, small collections consisting of a few documents or folders have been grouped and stored in the same box - these collections are marked as “collated”. The full list of collections included in all collations may be found on the Collated Collections tab of the Archival Collection Master List.

Series

Some collections may be subdivided into “series” based on a number of criteria, including the following: format or material type, purpose of the materials, donation records, and other factors. Further information on the arrangement of each series will be provided in the Finding Aid for that collection.
